Craftin Desert Divas has done it again with an amazing Mood/Inspiration Board for their monthly social media challenge! Not only is there a beautiful board to give you plenty of inspiration, but there are a TON of stamp sets as well as digital stamps in the shop that fit this board so perfectly, you’ll never run out of ideas!! For my card I chose to use the new “Best in Show” Digital Stamp and I really wanted to achieve a very soft colored look, but I just cannot do that with my colored pencils or alcohol markers and I just wasn’t in the mood and didn’t really want the look of watercolors. I know some people are very good at coloring this way with their alcohol markers and colored pencils, but I have tried and practiced and then practiced some more, but I always end up with very saturated color and no white space to speak of! Then, I remembered I had this old (and I mean OLD) set of chalk/pan pastels that I bought from Stampin’ Up! about 9 years ago! (These were on clearance and I bought them on a complete whim when I had no idea what was what in the cardmaking world!) After buying a new Dove Blender Pen, I sat down and started practicing with this forgotten coloring medium and I LOVED how effortlessly I was able to achieve such a soft look! Be sure to watch the video tutorial below to see how I used these chalk/pan pastels and my blender pen to create this soft and seamlessly blended scene!
ENJOY!!
After printing off the “Best in Show” digital stamp onto white card stock (I used my laser printer), I brought out the largest rectangle die in the Crazy Stitched Frame Dies to die cut a panel, making sure my stamp was in the top center of the die cut. After running it through my die cutting machine, it was time to start coloring. I pulled out my pan pastels/chalks and my Dove Blender Pen and started coloring.
I highly suggest watching the video tutorial for the full details on using this coloring medium and also a few tips and tricks. I do want to mention that my chalks are from Stampin’ UP and are no longer available. I purchased them on clearance around 8-9 years ago, so below I will list a few alternatives, but you might have this coloring medium laying around and don’t even remember it! If I am being honest, I purchased these when I first began making cards and had no idea how to even use them. They have sat untouched since I received them, so this is actually the very first time I’ve used them and they are incredibly easy to just pick up and start coloring! Also, the Dove Blender pen I am using with them is refillable and doesn’t cost very much at all!
With my coloring finished, I finished this card off pretty quickly. I used the Polar Pals Stamp Set from Craftin Desert Divas to stamp the sentiment “You’re the Best” below the colored image. I used black dye ink to stamp the sentiment. After adhering the finished panel onto an A2 top folding light gray card base with fun foam and double sided adhesive I added a few drops of Liquid Pearls in different sizes around the panel to finish off the card.
I am so happy I found these chalk pastels and I honestly can’t wait to use them again. They are such an effortless way to achieve a soft look to your coloring and it goes along perfectly with the #cddmonthly Challenge this month!
