One of my favorite tricks and techniques in cardmaking is creating my own patterned paper and backgrounds. I have very limited storage space, I literally work in a coat closet (yes a larger one, but closet none the less!), so I need to be VERY picky about what I choose to store and purchase. Patterned paper is not something I choose to take up real estate in my space, because I can easily make my own and customize it to fit my color schemes. And I can do it by using products I already have on hand! You can watch the video tutorial below for all the details on how I create this fun shaker card and made my own patterned paper in the process!
ENJOY!!
To stamp out the background I used the Farm Living Stamp Set from Craftin Desert Divas. Included in the set are three “spots” that I used to create a cow hide background on a 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″ white card stock panel using a black dye ink to stamp them. When I was happy with the way the pattern look, I brought out a black alcohol marker (you could always use a sharpie) to color in all of the “spots”. If you wanted to take this patterned paper background a step further you could always use some gray to add shading to the spots, however, I kept mine pretty simple. To get this paper ready for my card, I used the brand new Inside Scalloped Circle Die Set, the largest circle in the set, to die cut directly from the center of the paper. The great thing about this die set, is that not only does it add the stitching detail to the scalloped frame, but also the outside of the circle die cut as well!
I wanted to create a shaker card, but have my stamped images and sentiment on the inside of the shaker. In order to do that I put both a white blank square panel and the die cut panel overlaid on top, into my MISTI and was then able to line up the cow image stamp and the “cowabunga” sentiment directly over the die cut center. I then removed the top panel and stamped the cow and sentiment down in their exact spots using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink. After quickly coloring in the cow with my alcohol markers I started putting together my card and the shaker element.
The shaker was put together just like any other, I first put down acetate over the front opening laying down fun foam next using double sided adhesive. After dusting the acetate with my embossing bag to cut out any static and putting down double sided adhesive on the fun foam, I sprinkled in some of the brand new Pink and Black Sequin mix and then lined up the cow stamped panel directly over the top. For the card base I made a 5″ x 5″ black square card base and adhered the shaker onto it. To finish off the card, I put on a layer of Wink of Stella Clear Glitter Brush Pen on each of the “spots” I had colored earlier.
This card and video have been sitting for a good long while in my drafts, and was one I made for the CDD New Release back in February. I hope you all enjoyed a look at how this card was put together and also a look back at another one of my previous card.
