I am always mesmerized by mixed media, especially when watching a sped up video of someone creating! Watching all of those layers overlap and blend and all the different techniques work together to create on cohesive piece is absolutely amazing! I’ve never though of myself as a mixed media artist and to be quite honest, it scares me! But today I wanted to give it a go with a very simple layout! There aren’t too many layers here, but I did dip my toes in and it was fun! To watch my entire process for creating this Bible journal page, check out the video tutorial below!
I could not even begin to try and tell you step by step how to create the page. This is most definitely one of those times when the video tutorial is really your only option! But I can give you a few helpful tips I learned along the way. First, pull from techniques you already know how to do to start off and then mix in experiments! I started this page by gluing in tissue paper paper that I had printed on. I have already shown this technique, which you can watch HERE, and I knew I wanted that to be my “background” or base layer for the process, so that’s where I started and then built out from there.
I also found it really helpful to pull a few products beforehand that I knew I wanted to use. My inspiration for the day was the Rise and Shine stamp set from Joy Clair Stamps. From there, I built on the children’s song by adding the sheet music that I printed onto the tissue paper. I also looked at the stamp set and decided to add a bit of a scene. So I grabbed my acrylic paints to build that!
Finally, don’t be afraid to experiment a little bit. And if something happens that you don’t like, cover it up! I wasn’t crazy about the edges and the I felt the layout of my page was too spread out and big, so I used black gesso to completely cover them up! Also, if you cant cover something completely, you can always “tone it down” with more layers over the top!
So that is my very first adventure into the world of mixed media and a few tips and tricks I learned along the way! I hope you all enjoyed following along with me!!
