CAS – Clean and Simple – cards are some of my favorite styles of cards to make. I have to admit though, there are times these cards take longer than more elaborate technique cards! And as I look online I see so many people who struggle with designing CAS cards, too. So today, I wanted to share some ways that I like to use that add texture to my clean and simple cards. I put them all onto one card, so it’s not so simple anymore, but you don’t have to! You can use just one or two to keep your card nice and simple. Be sure to watch the video tutorial below for all the details!

Adding texture to your clean and simple cards is very simple once you start thinking about all the different mediums there are to use! My first way that I love to add texture to my clean and simple cards is with ink blending. You can just leave your ink one solid color, but I actually like to take it a step further. I like to use an ink that reacts with water (Distress Inks or Catherine Pooler Inks) and add splotches or I like to ink blend through a stencil.
Another great way to add texture (and texture you can feel) is with pastes. Whether you use modeling paste, embossing paste, glitter paste, texture paste, etc. it all works! You can add the paste just as it is, color it, put it through a stencil, add embossing powder over the top, etc. The list is literally endless!
I put my Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste through a stencil over the ink. You can see it pull the color up through the medium and colors the paste as well! It’s such a neat look. If you want to avoid coloring your paste, but still want to add it over ink blending, be sure you have a pigment ink (or non water based) ink beneath the paste.
Another way I like to add texture to my CAS cards is through my coloring. There are so many wonderful techniques out there that you can use to achieve great texture with coloring and with different mediums, too. I used Memento markers to color my coffee and I used very simple feathering to achieve texture to my coffee!
Also, don’t forget about different layering techniques, like paper piecing, to add more texture! I used paper piercing with kraft card stock on my coffee to add some dimensional texture. But you can use glitter paper, flocked paper, patterned paper, etc. There are so many options on the market you can really play around with all of them and just experiment!
While I was working on the cup I wanted to add another product I had on hand called Amplify. There are a few products like this on the market and basically it is a paint or liquid that you put onto your project and then heat set. When you add the heat it puffs and creates wonderful texture! Be sure to check out all the wonderful colors that Imagine offers with the product as well! You could add it to balloons, clothing stamps, animals, etc.
Another way I like to add texture is through using different fibers. On my card today, I placed a messy pile of string behind my cup. This is such an easy way to add A LOT of texture! But string is only one fibers. You can also use felt, flock, denim, lace, ribbon, etc. There are so many wonderful possibilities with fibers!!
The last way I added texture to my card today was with GLITTER!! One of my last posts was all about glitter and I just couldn’t resist adding it to my card today. I decided to glitter my sentiment, which is super easy to do! All you need to do is die cut a sentiment, add it to your cardstock and then release the backing paper. You can add loose glitter, or you can use Glitter Sheets like I used today! Super easy!!
There are so many ways to add texture to CAS card designs and while I put so many on my card today, you can use just one or two and really add a lot to your clean and simple cards!
