I love making birthday cards! They’re so much fun to make and birthdays are just a fun occassion! And sometimes I just want to make a card – no technique focus, or experimenting – just make a easy handmade birthday card! So that’s what today’s tutorial is. Watch below and learn how to make this easy handmade birthday card!

The Video Tutorial
In the video tutorial above I use some products that were sent to me free of charge for design purposes. I only ever design for companies I can stand behind 100%! For more information on who I currently or have previously designed for head HERE.
Making the Handmade Birthday Card

To start this card I prepped a piece of watercolor paper with an anti static pouch. Then, onto that watercolor paper, I stamped the Cupcake with Strawberry stamp with Versafine Clair ink in Nocturne. I used my mini MISTI so I could double stamp the image, since I was stamping onto water color paper.
I used Versafine Clair ink in Nocturne, specifically, so I coud heat emboss the stamped image. And that was the next step, heat embossing the stampd image with clear embossing powder. Anytime I’m watercoloring an image, I really like to heat emboss the image. This give the watercolor a bit of a “well” or border to stay within. It won’t bleed as easily into the colors next to it, and I don’t have to wait for the colors to completely dry.

Once my image was fully heat embossed, it was time to start coloring! It’s been awhile since I have used my Arteza Real Brush Markers, so I pulled those out and got to work! I will list the colors I used down below, but really there isn’t a lot to coloring with these markers. I put the color down where I want it the darkest. Then, with a waterbrush, I blend the color out. Super easy!!
The colors of markers I used are: 102 Chocolate, 101 Red, 112 Orange, 105 Lemon Yellow, 120 Seaweed Green, 149 Bubblegum Pink, 188 Wisteria Purple, 115 Smoke Gray, 116 Fair Skin

After the color was complete, I sat the image aside to dry. I love the look of the watercolor best when I let it air dry. Sometimes I’m too impatient, and I hit it with the heat tool. But if at all possible I like to sit aside and work on another part of the card while it dries.
That’s what I did here. While the stamped cupcake was drying I ink blended a quick background panel for the cupcake to sit on. The panel is white cardstock and measures 3.75″ x 5″. To ink blend I used my Amazon make up blending brushes and Catherine Pooler ink in Royal Treatment. I started in the center of the panel and added just a light layer of ink in an oval making sure to keep the edges nice and soft. The Amazon make up blending brushes make blending like this a breeze!

After ink blending the panel, I quickly fussy cut the stamped image making sure it was completely dry before I started. Then, it was onto the sentiment. For the sentiment I wanted to use the “Happy Birthday Wishing” stamp, but I wanted it to be a one line sentiment instead of two.
In order to do that, I first lined up the “happy” part of the sentiment on the left hand side of the panel and masked off the birthday with tape. After inking up the stamp, I removed the tape and stamped down the sentiment. Then, I cleaned the stamp REALLY well. I didn’t want any ink leftover to transfer when I stamped the birthday. After lining up the “birthday”, I masked off the happy with tape and inked up the stamp. Then, just like before, I removed the tape and stamped the image to complete the sentiment.

With all the components of the handmade card ready to go, I started assembling the birthday card. I adhered the cupcake with foam adhesive to the center of the ink blending. Then, I matted the panel with kraft cardstock. Finally, I adhered both panel onto an A2 top folding card base with foam adhesive.

I could’ve left the card as is, but I wanted to add just a little something more. Using Diamond Glaze, I added a layer to the flame for a little extra shine.
I hope you all enjoyed a look at this easy handmade birthday card. It’s fun to just make a card for no other reason than I want to, sometimes! And I always love making birthday cards, they’re just so cheerful.
