As my son gets older, I am finding it harder and harder to create birthday cards for his friends. If they could all be video gamed themed, I’d be good, but I do need to switch it up from time to time. So today I’m sharing a few ideas, because to be honest, I needed to create some for my stash! You can watch the video tutorial below to see how I created these easy 5 minute boy birthday cards!

Making the Handmade Cards
3D Stenciled Birthday Card

When I want to make quick cards, one of my go to supplies is my stencils. If you didn’t know The Crafter’s Workshop just had a HUGE new release of stencils and in that release was the new Geo Netting stencil. This stencil creates a 3D like effect and it’s perfect for creating quick cards for pre-teen boys. My kiddo loves optical illusions, so I was excited to see this stencil in the release!

All I did to create this card was ink blending through the stencil with a Versafine Clair Summertime ink, which is a nice bright orange. Then, after matting the stenciled panel and attaching it to an A2 top folding card base I added a sentiment banner. The sentiment is from the Paper Smooches “Sentiment Sampler” stamp set, one of my ALL TIME FAVORITES!! I love the fun font and it’s what I used on both of my cards today!
You Rock Birthday Card

This next card uses another new stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop new release called “Landscape”. I loved the bars on this stencil and thought they would be great for creating a music based card. I stenciled the bars with Versafine Clair Paradise ink onto the die cut circle that I cut from the top center of the panel. Then, on the outside of the panel, I stenciled the Micro Dots stencils with Verdant ink, also Versafine Clair. And of course, I used the same sentiment set from the first card to stamp the You Rock sentiment that finished this card.

Because the outside of this card said You Rock, it wasn’t specifcally birthday. To fix that, I stamped the birthday sentiment on the inside of the card to finish it! And again, I used the same Sentiment Sampler stamp set from Paper Smooches.
Tips and Tricks for Creating Cards for Boys
- I do not spend a lot of time on the cards I know my son is going to be taking to birthday parties. I still make them presentable, but I always try and remember these are young boys and the majority of the time the card isn’t what they’re interested in. It’s what IN the card, lol.
- I love to go bright and bold. Grundy and vintage are fun for more older masculine cards, but for younger pre-teen and teenagers I really like to go with more bright colors!
- Dimension isn’t something I use a lot of on these cards. My son is going to be stuffing these cards into an envelope. He, nor any other kid, is going to want to fight to get layers upon layers of dimension into an envelope.
- Have fun colors of sharpies or markers on hand for signatures. This is just a little bonus, but my son LOVES to write his message on the inside of the card and names on the envelopes with more fun colors!
Above, I mentioned that I used stencils from The Crafter’s Workshop new release. Their releases are quite large, so I always love to break them down in a video tutorial. If you missed it before, you can check it out here!
I hope you all enjoyed today’s video tutorial and found it helpful! If you are interested in any of the supplies I used today, you can find them all listed and linked down below. Until next time, happy crafting!!
