Hi everyone! Let me first start by saying I hope everyone reading this is healthy and safe wherever you are in the world. We are all learning a new normal right now. For the next month, at least, my new normal is having both of my kiddos home with me (which I love), planning for and teaching them, and keeping them to a somewhat normal schedule. We are so incredibly fortunate, and I understand that. But because this is my new normal for the time being, my time has become extremely limited. If you have followed my blog and videos for some time, you know I LOVE to give lots of examples and ideas in my tutorials, but that just isn’t possible right now.
My videos will be one card or project and fairly short. That’s my new normal, and that’s ok right now. We are all just doing our best.
Onto the project for today! Today, I want to share a little selective foiling with stencils. This is such an easy technique to use with your stencils to create an image with multiple textures and finishes. Watch the video tutorial below!

The Technique

When using the selective foiling technique it’s all about masking! I decided to go with the new “Nature’s Circuitry” stencil from The Crafter’s Workshop and it is perfect for this technique! This stencil has several images, but I decided to use the largest butterfly on the 6″ x 6″ stencil.

Before foiling, I had to first ink blend the area of the stencil that I didn’t want foiled. I used two dye inks and my Amazon blending brushes. It’s not really necessary to mask the rest of the stencil, but I did in this case, so the dye ink wouldn’t bleed with the gel I would be using on the right side of the stencil.
When the ink blending was complete, I masked off that area of the stencil with delicate painter’s tape. Then, it was time to put the Hot Foil Gel through the remaining stencil area. The trick with the Hot Foil Gel is a thin, even layer! It doesn’t need to be thick, but try and make it as smooth as possible.
Once you have your gel on, remove the stencil and wash it immediately or put it into a water bath. Once this gel dries, it’s there and not going anywhere! That being said, you will know the gel is dry and ready to use when it is clear.

Once the gel dried completely, it was time to add the foil. I decided I wanted to add a few different textures to this butterfly. For the center or body of the butterfly, I added black flock. Then, on top of that I laid Pewter foil so it would cover the remainder of the gel exposed. For this to make more sense, be sure to watch the video above!
But all that was left to do to complete the foiling was run it through the laminator. I LOVE the way it turned out!!

To finish this card, I kept it simple. I used the Micro Dots stencil and gray ink to add a little texture to the background. Then, I finished it off with a Hey There flag banner sentiment.
I hope you all enjoyed a look at how easy it is to do selective foiling with your stencils. And how easily you can add more textures and finishes with this technique!
